Dr. Portia M. York is the CEO and Creative Educator of York Creative Education Group. She is a professor and accomplished fiber artist, teaching fibers courses at Lenoir-Rhyne University and the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Dr. York holds a B.A. in Sociology, a Master of
Management, a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Urban Education, and a Master of Advanced Crochet Stitches and Techniques certification. Her research focuses on merging math education with crochet art to support Black girls in STEM/STEAM, as well as exploring the well-being benefits of crochet.
Prior to her current roles, she served as a school administrator for 15 years, supporting diverse children with learning differences. Dr. York's work centers on innovative fiber arts workshops and curricula, emphasizing Crochet and Mathematical Concepts in STEAM, and the Well-Being Benefits of Crochet. She is also the author of The Influence of Dramatic Arts on Literacies for Black Girls in Middle School.
