Our Response to Supreme Court’s Decision on Affirmative Action

A statement from Shana Benford, Chief Program and Impact Officer at Project Scientist:
Our response to Supreme Court's decision on Affirmative Action

As the Chief Program and Impact Officer at Project Scientist, I am dedicated, along with our entire team, to support marginalized girls who identify as Black, Latine, Indigenous, or other persons of color in their pursuit of college and career opportunities. The recent ruling by the United State Supreme Court on the University of North Carolina's holistic admissions program undermines the progress we have made in addressing the race-based gaps that persist in our society and further perpetuates the systemic inequalities faced by marginalized communities.

At Project Scientist, we firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are essential for creating a more equitable society. We understand that race-conscious admissions policies are vital for ensuring that underrepresented students have access to higher education. In light of this ruling, we are committed to redoubling our efforts to support marginalized groups in their journey towards college and career success.

To continue our mission, Project Scientist will strengthen our partnerships with educational institutions, organizations, and businesses that share our commitment to diversity and inclusion. We will continue providing marginalized girls with fair opportunities to pursue education via these partnerships. Additionally, we will expand our programming to empower girls aged 4-18 years from marginalized communities, providing them with comprehensive support and resources, to overcome barriers and thrive in their academic and professional endeavors.

Project Scientist recognizes the importance of internal representation and fostering an inclusive environment within our organization. We are committed to long-term efforts to ensure that our team better reflects the communities we work with. By cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce, we aim to enhance our understanding, empathy, and effectiveness in supporting marginalized girls. We will actively promote diversity in our recruitment and create opportunities for professional development and advancement for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.

While this ruling is disheartening, Project Scientist remains steadfast in our dedication to leveling the playing field for marginalized girls of color. Together with our partners and supporters like you, we will continue to work toward a future where all individuals have equal access to educational and career opportunities, regardless of their race or background. Read on to know how you can support us this summer and beyond.
